Hake Brushes, pronounced HAH-kay, are a traditional type of Japanese brush. Hake Brushes are a plain handled wide flat brush made with selected soft goat hair. This brush has a variety of uses, such as block printing, watercolour washes and dusting. The Hake Brush has a long history with first records from the “Wamyō Ruijushō,” a document written in 923 AD during the Heian Period, and was made of millet plants to paint lacquer on bow and arrows and bowls. The price of hake is determined primarily by the type and quality of the hair used.

Hake Brushes are available in-store and online at The PaintBox, home to the widest range of traditional and progressive Art Supplies in Adelaide.
