Borciani & Bonazzi – Mangusta Unico Series 801 Flat Brushes from Italy

Borciani  Bonazzi Synthetic Series 801 Flat Brushes are  made from a Unica Mangusta, a Mongoose Synthetic fibre.  These brushes are bound with a chromed aluminium ferrule with a short shaped handle perfect for taking control when painting. These brushes are great for Acrylics, Gouache and Watercolours and glazing in oils.

Given the unregulated farming and production of animal hair for brushes in China and growing concern for the environment it is understandable that  a Cruelty Free approach has increasingly lead artists to choose synthetic fibre brushes over animal fibre. This has been coupled with the rapid development of high grade synthetic fibres which comw is several grades. At The PaintBox we are always on the lookout for gold standard synthetic fibre brushes and in our view Borciani Bonazzi have come up trumps. Unico mangusta synthetic fibre is a world apart from cheap synthetic brushes: born from careful research on the properties of natural fibre, BB has brought back the best qualities of animal fibre and has recreated it in this new  hollow fibre with slow water release combined with the resistance of the pale filaments that retain the characteristics of the natural bristle. Unico synthetic fibres are suitable for all painting techniques and for professional use.

For more than half a century Borciani Bonazzi has been specialising in the production of fine art brushes.

In 1951, in a small artisan shop in Emilia Romagna, siblings Wilma and Arturo Bonazzi decided to set up their own business after years of training with the local masters, where they learned the secrets of traditional gestures, their sequence and the ability to recognize the most suitable materials for the manufacture of high-quality brushes.

Wilma married the young Borciani and the union of the two surnames gave rise to the brand. The business was immediately outstanding for product quality, accurate artisan craftsmanship and courtesy in satisfying the demands of professional restorers and painters, who came to the brush factory searching for special tools for their art.

Still today, gestures learned over time are being repeated like a magic ritual.
Our entirely Made in Italy production has preserved the attention to raw materials along with artisan skills, hence satisfying the most demanding artists, lute makers, gilders and restorers, who have preferred us for years.

Borciani Bonazzi brushes have always fulfilled the expectations of artists looking for the highest quality ‘Made in Italy’ brushes.

High quality, intense research and innovation applied to tools intended for ancient painting techniques, have been repeatedly tested using our artistic brushes.

The fascinating story of Borciani Bonazzi has seen artisan experience applied to important interventions on monuments and works of art in Italy such as the massive restoration of the Sistine Chapel in Rome and obtaining recognition from the prestigious national restoration schools of Istituto Centrale di Restauro in Rome and Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence. In the words of Borciani Bonazzi:

“Creating brushes is a story of hands, tools, raw materials and passion.

A brush contains infinite possibilities.
It contains the magic of the stroke on the paper, which gives life to the figure.
It contains the hidden detail, able to reveal secret worlds.
It contains the shadow that contrasts the light, making it even more vibrant.
It contains the mistake, which is sometimes frustration, but at other times it becomes a starting point for a new path.
It contains productive afternoons, relaxing evenings, mornings yearning for paper or canvas.
A brush is bristles, ferrule and handle, but it contains endless possibilities.

The brush also embodies our passion, the same passion we have put in making your brushes every day for 70 years.
It is exactly 70 years, and today we celebrate our anniversary.

Since 1951, when the Borciani spouses with their brother-in-law Bonazzi worked in a small artisan workshop, we are today a structured Italian company, in which traditional and manual production has been flanked over the years by innovation, research and increasingly advanced tools.
What has never changed is the passion we use every day to make the best tools for our artists.

And we want to celebrate this moment with you, thanking you for giving life, every day, on paper, on canvas, to our brushes.

Because your art gives reason to exist to our passion, the one of making the best brushes for those who love painting”.
