Gum Benzoin is used as a fixative, slowing the dispersion of essential oils and other materials into the air. It is used in restoration and is occasionally called for in some of the old varnish recipes where it evidently was employed for its odour.
Also called Gum Benjamin, it is a reddish-brown, aromatic balsamic resin occurring in almond-like fragments and having a vanilla-like scent, obtained from trees of the genus Styrax benzoin, Java, Sumatra, etc.
