Used for protective coatings, Sandarac can be used for mediums. Specified in many recipes to provide hardness to other oils or resins. Used by artists to make varnish. Ground gum sandarac can be used as a resist for lettering. It shrinks the ink very slightly so that letter strokes are crisp and fine. Also used as the base for varnishing collodion tintype, ambrotype and wet plate negatives to protect the surface and the silver image from oxidisation.

A hard resin collected obtained from the small cypress-like Alcerec tree Tetraclinis articulata. The tree is native to the northwest of Africa with a notable presence in the Southern Morocco part of the Atlas mountains. The resin exudes naturally on the stems of the tree. It is also traditionally harvested by making cuts on the bark. It comes in rounded granules and sometimes has tiny dried twigs in the resin, truly a raw material.
