Japan Wax is a vegetable wax obtained from the berry kernels of the Sumac tree found in Japan.

The wax is pale cream in color and is not particularly hard. Technically considered a fatty wax glyceride, Japan Wax is a pale yellow soft wax with an adhesive, sticky consistency. Used in polishes and waxes, pastels and crayons.

Japan wax is a byproduct of lacquer manufacture. The fruits of the Toxicodendron trees are harvested, steamed, and pressed for the waxy substance which harden when cool. It is not a true wax but a fat that contains 95% palmitin. Japan wax is sold in flat squares or disks and has a rancid odor. It is extracted by expression and heat, or by the action of solvents.

Japan (Sumac) Wax, alternatively spelled sumach wax, is a wax produced from pressing the fruit of the Rhus succedanea plant, referred to as the Japanese wax tree and belonging to the Anarchadiaceae or sumac family. This plant is indigenous to China and Japan with Sumac Wax said to be the Chinese variety of the Japanese wax; however, there is no real difference between these in terms of composition and natural properties. Japan wax is a harder, more brittle wax than some other waxes, growing in popularity throughout the cosmetic and personal-care industries for its emulsifying and moisturizing benefits in personal-care formulations. Bulk Japan wax is an economical vegan option with a melting point range of 110 – 132 degrees F, commonly referred to as Berry Wax or Vegetable Wax, and is found in various makeup products such as eye pencils, lipsticks, and other beauty products.
