Description
Gamblin Gamsol is an odourless solvent that allows oil painters to thin oil colours. A little goes a long way; stiff oil colours relax immediately when a little Gamsol is added.
Be careful not to thin oil colours too much with Gamsol alone, this can compromise the ability of the paint to form a paint film. Please note that Gamsol has been marketed in Australia as a medium to be used without oil. Our professional opinion is that this is erroneous and we recommend the use of an underpainting medium which artists can make in their studio from oil and solvent (odourless or otherwise) or it can be purchsed, see Langridge Low Toxic Solvent. We make this statement because the overuse of odourless solvent IS creating adhesion problems and causing damage in paintings, this damage will begin to become evident after ten years. Do NOT block in your underpainting using just odourless solvent!
For use in modifying painting mediums: Gamblin’s Galkyd line of painting mediums are formulated with Gamsol, so they readily accept Gamsol as a thinning agent. Note:Â Gamsol should not be added to painting mediums made with natural resins (dammar, copal, mastic). They require organic solvents such as rectified turpentine.
Gamsol is a petroleum distillate but all the aromatic solvents have been refined out of it, less than .005% remains. Aromatic solvents are the most harmful types of petroleum solvents.
Gamsol’s flash point is so high it can ship via air cargo as a non-hazardous material.
